Why is WILLIAMSBURG SO FANCY?

I don't know if you're from New York, or wishing to move there or simply about to visit, but there's something you should know:
Williamsburg is damn fancy and hip.
Why is that? I'm glad you asked that, and my opinion is related to one of the major attraction of the neighborhood: the Brooklyn Brewery.

Brooklyn beer as always been bottled there in Williamsburg, since 1988, and its history is - again - related to Italy and Italians. Apparently only 25 years ago Brooklyn and Williamsburg in particular where not particularly cool places, mostly because of low income immigrants living there, and the mob. So when the guy funding the Brewery had to pick a place to start his business he picked Williamsburg because of the cheap prices.

Nonetheless the mob used to oblige small firm to "hire" fake employees and pay them regularly as a bribe to the mob. Then the guy - not very rich indeed - tried not to pay that bribe, and thus some mob folks got him into another building in the area and told everybody else to get out. They told him they were going to hit him, and as soon as he was freaking out, they said they were kidding. In fact they thought that a brand new brewery in the area would have made the neighborhood much livelier, thus they would let him start the business.

That's why Williams is so cool - as far as I'm concerned - all that followed was just a snowball starting from the first bottled of beer sold in the Brooklyn Brewery.

Another probably interesting note for our readers into design: the Brooklyn Brewery logo I've printed above was designed by Milton Glaser, which btw has a really cool website. He also designed the I love NY logo, you might have seen it somewhere.

Cheers,
Guido.
